For October, the most reliable bets are San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker (snorkeling and island time), San Ignacio in Cayo District (Maya ruins, rainforest and caves), and northern sites like Lamanai and Altun Ha. Southern Belize (Placencia, Toledo) is beautiful but receives the most rain, so it makes a better second stop than a first choice.
How We Ranked These Places
October rainfall runs from about 60 inches a year in the north to about 160 inches a year in the south, according to the National Meteorological Service. So we weighted three things: how often the activity still runs in heavy rain, how well the place absorbs a day of clouds, and how easy it is to reach when boats or roads are affected.
1. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island, and San Pedro Town is its hub, about 75 to 90 minutes by water taxi from Belize City or roughly 20 minutes by small plane. It sits in the drier north of the country.
Why October works: Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are a short boat ride south, and snorkeling is possible on calm mornings. Golf carts are the way people get around town. Golf cart rentals in San Pedro handle showers better than you’d think, since you can duck under a bar overhang.

2. Caye Caulker
South of Ambergris Caye and closer to the mainland, Caye Caulker is a small, walkable island with no cars, roughly 45 minutes from Belize City by water taxi. It is the first stop on the water-taxi route to San Pedro. The Split, a channel cut by Hurricane Hattie in 1961, is the social heart of the island.
Why October works: It is compact, easy on budgets and quiet. Snorkel trips leave from the dock, and a rainy afternoon fits its slow pace.
3. San Ignacio and the Cayo District
San Ignacio is the gateway to Belize’s inland adventures, about two hours from Belize City by road. From here you reach Xunantunich (via a small hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River at San José Succotz), Cahal Pech, Mountain Pine Ridge, and the cave sites.
Why October works: Rivers and waterfalls are at their fullest, and ruins are quiet. Cayo is a good “rain day” region because there is plenty to do under cover, from museums to chocolate tours.
4. Lamanai and the New River
Lamanai is in northern Belize, reached by a boat trip along the New River from the Orange Walk District. The site has been occupied for roughly 3,000 years and sits in forest where you’re likely to see howler monkeys and birds.
Why October works: The boat ride is part of the tour, and forest canopy keeps the site comfortable. It is also one of the more scenic ways to see a Maya site.
5. Altun Ha
About 30 kilometers northwest of Belize City, Altun Ha is the most convenient Maya site from the airport and cruise port. The site produced one of the largest carved jade objects found in the Maya world.
Why October works: It is compact and quick to visit, so it fits between showers.
6. Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
This wetland in Belize District is one of the country’s best places for birds, and fall migration adds new arrivals in October. Water levels are high in the wet season, which spreads out the birds.
Why October works: Boat tours reach places that are unreachable on foot at other times of year.
7. Hopkins
This Garifuna village on the Stann Creek coast is a good place to hear drumming and try hudut, a traditional fish and plantain dish. It is a solid choice for a slower, culture-forward stop.
Why October works: Cultural experiences happen indoors and out, and the town is calm.
What to Leave for Another Season
A few popular ideas are better saved for the dry season. Remote lodges reached by long unpaved roads, such as those in Mountain Pine Ridge or near the Guatemalan border, are harder to reach after days of rain. Offshore trips to the atolls depend on calm seas and can be cancelled at short notice. And beach-only stays in the far south will test your patience if the weather turns.
None of this rules those places out. It just means that in October they should be a bonus stop with slack in the schedule, not the anchor of your trip. If you do want a mountain or jungle lodge, ask the property directly about road conditions the week you travel, and keep a night or two in a town such as San Ignacio as a fallback.
